Have you recently started working for yourself? If so, you will need to register as self-employed with HMRC.
You need to register as soon as possible after starting your own business, although the deadline for registration is the 5th October following the end of your business’s first tax year. For example, if you began your self-employment on 5th September 2016, you will need to have registered by 5th October 2017.
To register online, you will need to follow the link on this page: https://www.gov.uk/log-in-file-self-assessment-tax-return/register-if-youre-self-employed
Complete the details in the boxes provided and this will create your online account. Once you have registered, you will be sent your Unique Tax Reference which you will need to complete your tax return and you will also be sent an activation code to activate your online account.
If you have already sent a tax return before, but need to register as self-employed again, you can also do this online, by completing a CWF1 form. If you have an accountant that you want to act on your behalf, you can ask them to complete this for you.
If you don’t wish to register online you can also complete your form and then post it to HMRC.
If you need any assistance with registering as self-employed and would like an accountant to act on your behalf, get in touch.
